Are We Doing Enough to Support Mental Health at Work?
Hello Quynh,
We hope you're doing well!
Stress is a normal response to pressure and challenge, particularly in roles where people are supporting others, dealing with difficult situations, or managing heavy responsibility.
However, when stress becomes ongoing or intense, it can begin to impact mental health. Over time, this may show up as emotional exhaustion, reduced confidence, difficulty coping with pressure, or burnout.
In many roles, stress can come from:
Exposure to distressing situations
Emotionally challenging conversations
Time pressure and high workloads
Feeling responsible for helping others
While stress itself isn’t avoidable, how we respond to it and how we’re supported makes a real difference.
This is where resilience comes in.
Resilience is our ability to respond to stress and recover afterwards. It helps us manage pressure without becoming overwhelmed, enabling people to continue in their roles while protecting their mental wellbeing.
How we can help
At Society Matters, we have a CPD Accredited Understanding Stress and Mental Healthcourse which provides a practical understanding of stress and mental health, helping frontline professionals recognise signs, support wellbeing, and respond confidently in real-world situations. However, we know that mental health looks different for everyone, and every role faces its own challenges. That’s why getting it right means going beyond generic training and designing support around real, lived experience.
Earlier this year, we worked closely with the Help Through Hardship team to design a bespoke, full‑day course focused on resilience and the mental health impact of emotionally demanding work. This is what their Team Leader, Nicola, shared:
